Founded in 1991, Instrumental began by creating software products for large government and scientific supercomputing data centers. These system management tools enabled large data centers to administer, operate and manage computer systems and networks more efficiently. Often these sophisticated applications required implementation assistance and ongoing support, leading Instrumental to introduce consulting services as a complementary line of business in 1992. The Company provided supercomputing support services such as system performance analysis and optimization, technology assessment and system design and integration services for a number of government customers, defense contractors and several large vendors. This expertise spawned, in part, by the Company's proximity to the supercomputing legend Cray Research, Inc.
By 1997, the federal government had hired Instrumental to support the installation of a complex high-performance computing solution. The Company was engaged not only to architect the high-speed real-time data capture capability, but also to quarterback the many vendors on the team. The overwhelming success of the project led immediately to a flood of mission-critical engagements in the government and a new business model based on consulting was launched.
The success of the Company's refocusing efforts was further validated in 2002 when Instrumental was named the chief architect to design, develop, implement and test a very large storage area network for the U.S. intelligence community. Shortly thereafter, the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program made Instrumental a key member of their management and support team.
