Automating intelligence: machine learning and the future of manufacturing

With so many buzzwords flying around in the manufacturing space these days, it’s easy to get distracted from what matters: better outcomes.

At the end of June, Instrumental had the opportunity to present a SkyTalk at the Design Automation Conference, held in San Francisco, California. DAC, as it is known, is a technical conference and trade show specializing in electronic design automation and is attended by top engineering, operations, and automation professionals looking to identify innovative automation technologies. I was told by multiple organizers that this was the best attended SkyTalk of DAC 2018, and am excited to share it with you.

After acknowledging the buzzwords in the room (and providing some concise definitions for Industry 4.0, Industrial IOT, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning, if you’re interested to know), I got down to brass tacks and explained the opportunity that automation provides: the ability to aggregate high resolution data in order to drive better manufacturing outcomes. Better yields, time to market, quality, and throughput all take hard work that’s done by teams of engineers, and one of the fastest ways to get better outcomes today is to support the work of these engineers by aggregating actionable data and giving them powerful tools to support their process improvement workflows. I walk through a very detailed example from one of our customers: how they used actually deployed Instrumental on their line and used the technology to make faster decisions and save significant money in both development and production.

There are a lot of buzzwords in this space, but what really matters is better outcomes.
